Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
