Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
