European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
